Willie Randolph was dismissed as manager of the New York Mets early this morning, according to mlb.com. Jerry Manuel has been named interim manager.
Despite having one of the league's highest payrolls, the Mets have been inconsistent. Thus, the team felt it was time for a fresh face to step in as manager.
Willie Randolph led the Mets to a large division lead in 2007, but a collapse in the season's final week handed the Philadelphia Phillies the NL East title. The Mets have not recovered since.
Willie Randolph is the first manager to be sacked this season in Major League Baseball. It is certain, though, he will not be the last.
