This Thursday, the Civil Rose War will be played against the Oregon Ducks and Oregon State Beavers at Autzen Stadium. This marks the first time in this historic rivalry that the winner will receive an automatic Rose Bowl berth, so it is only fitting the rivalry should be called The Civil Rose War. Last year, the Oregon Ducks upset the Oregon State Beavers 65-30 and crushed the Beavers Rose Bowl dreams. The Beavers look to return the favor. It is only fitting that both of these teams are rank next to each other in total offense. The only difference is the Ducks prefer to run the ball and the Beavers prefer to pass the ball.
Historically the winner of this game is usually the underdog, which should bold well the Oregon State Beavers. If the Beavers look to pull off the upset, they will need a great game from quarterback Sean Canfield. Canfield has had a very good season in throwing for over 1,900 yards and 19 touchdowns. As dangerous as Canfield can be, Jacquizz Rodgers is the main threat. Rodgers has already run for over 1,300 yards and 19 rushing touchdowns himself. The small running back packs power and is very elusive. As elusive as Rodgers is, the Beavers might have a tough time slowing down the Oregon Ducks true freshman running back in LaMichael James. He has rushed for 1,300 yards, and was projected as a second string running back when the season started. I guess this tailback match up between James and Rodgers can be the Long Star Shootout since both are from Texas.
I feel this is a rivalry that never gathers the publicity and credit that it deserves because it is on the west coast and usually the USC Trojans steal the spotlight this time of year. Now the Trojans are out of the Pac-10 title and Oregon & Oregon State will have the spotlight for the whole country to see on Thursday night. This will be a high scoring affair and this will be close. The Civil Rose War is coming and the nation will be watching Thursday night.
