It’s great to be a fan of a franchise with such great tradition, but every now and then, even something with great tradition needs some help. Bears fans are frustrated. We're tired! This season started with such high hopes, and now we feel like next year is so far away.
Only adding to our misery is that our last playoff trip is even farther away.
It is time for some drastic changes. And when I say it is time, I mean right away!
McCaskey family, you need us right now. Here are some recommendations from a lifelong Bears fan.
Get rid of Jerry Angelo. We are tired already of not having a first-round pick next year. We don’t like that he traded our second-round pick next year. And he failed to structure the Jay Cutler deal in a way to make the team successful this year.
Fire Ron Turner! He has not been good at calling the plays in Chicago since Erik Kramer was our quarterback. For those of you reading this who are new Bears fans, that’s back during his first stint with the team.
Sever ties with Brian Urlacher. I don’t know what happened to this guy, but he went from a decent guy early in his career to a prima donna (as evidenced by the last Michael Silver article). He is an injury risk——neck, back, hamstrings, wrist, etc., but he still has trade value. Don’t let that get away without getting some return on it. And make this an early move, so we don’t have to hear him whine about Lovie Smith getting canned.
Can Lovie Smith. Lovie was a great coach. Don’t know what happened. But he just can’t get the best out of his players.
Choose a coach from this list: Mike Holmgren, Mike Shanahan, Ron Rivera, and (this one might surprise you, but he’s a good NFL offensive coach) Charlie Weis.
Unload all of this year’s picks and Urlacher, and get a first or high second-round pick. We need some star power on the O-line or at the receiver position. (I'm being facetious with the Cade McNown draft picture. Hopefully we can do better than that.)
Include Hester in the deal to get even more value. Somehow, I don’t think that his departure will signal a significant decline in the receiving corps. And his return skills have not been the same since they moved him to wide receiver. Anybody surprised?
Find a replacement for Mike Brown. I guess he really was the best player on the defense. Get a guy in the secondary who is a leader, who makes everyone better, who plays the angles well, and who is smart. Do whatever it takes to get him. I’m starting to think safety is the most important position on the field.
Trade Tommie Harris. Get whomever you can, while you can. Too much is invested in him right now, but he's not enough of a difference maker.
In short, own up to the franchise's recent mistakes, and get us back on the right track. I promise, we will forgive.
