With all the big name former coaches that will be currently on the market in 2010, there will be quite a few big name free agents that will hit the market in 2010 as well.
The Cleveland Browns have so many holes that not even the 2010 NFL Draft will be able to fill all of their needs.
With a few smart free agent veteran additions combined with picking the appropriate younger players in the draft, the Browns could be able to turn a corner to prevent another 10 plus loss season to maybe even break .500.
The following are a list of free agents that the Browns had better look at to fill holes in their roster once the 2009 season comes to an end.
Pennington may have suffered his third should injury and at 33, he will not receive much attention in free agency. However, his experience is what's most important for the Browns.
Regardless of whether or not the Browns keep Brady Quinn, Pennington's mentoring will help if Quinn stays or a rookie is brought in.
The Browns have had mostly young inexperienced quarterbacks on their roster without the benefit of a veteran to mentor them for several years now. That needs to change in 2010.
A veteran like Pennington is needed to help whoever the Browns' franchise quarterback might be.
Other quarterbacks to consider: Daunte Culpepper (Lions), Jason Campbell (Redskins, as a possible further developmental project), and Tavaris Jackson (Vikings, same developmental project as Campbell).
White has been overshadowed by fellow running Chris Johnson.
With the success of Johnson, it will be interesting to see if the Titans consider keeping White on their roster for 2010. If they don't, the Browns should really consider this big bruiser.
Since Jamal Lewis has announced his retirement following the 2009 season, the Browns will be in need of a big, strong, running back who can push the pile and run in between the tackles.
White has had a history of being overweight, but in 2009 he went from his previous playing weight of 265-pounds to a slimmer and faster 235-pounds.
Since White is riding the bench, look for him to bring a new focus to produce if the Titans part ways.
Other running backs to consider: Willie Parker (Steelers), Mike Bell (Saints), and Chester Taylor (Vikings).
Walter will have a place on any NFL roster for many years to come due to his size (6'3" 215-pounds) and the Browns need a starting receiver opposite of Mohamed Massaquoi.
Walter would be inserted into the starting lineup in the exact same fashion as Joe Jurevicius was in 2006 and 2007.
A solid possession receiver, Walter would be an excellent compliment to Massaquoi's big play potential.
Walter has played with one of the best receivers in the NFL in Andre Johnson and would be able to teach the younger receivers the ropes while still contributing on the field for several more years.
Other receivers to consider: Domenik Hixon (Giants) or Chris Chambers (Chief, in a mentor role).
Fasano is not a flashy or fancy tight end, but he can catch the ball and block.
He is more like a younger version of Steve Heiden.
Playing with Brady Quinn at Notre Dame would help give Quinn greater comfort if the Browns decide to retain Quinn as their starting quarterback, but regardless of what happens with Quinn the Browns need an upgrade over Robert Royal.
Other tight ends to consider: Ben Watson (Patriots), Bo Scaife (Titans), and LJ Smith (Ravens).
Justice has finally begun to put together some decent play at right tackle for the Eagles, but with other high-priced free agents recently signed like Stacey Andrews on the roster, the Eagles may not be able to afford Justice in 2010.
Justice may not be the best right tackle in the NFL, but he would be a definite upgrade to what the Browns have on the right side now with John St. Clair.
(UPDATE: 12-1-09 at 3:42pm) It was overseen that Justice signed a contract extension on 11-24 with the Eagles, so please draft a stud RT in the draft.)
Other right tackles to consider: please just draft one.
Merriman is no where near where he used to be before his injuries, but he is still very young and capable of regaining his old swagger.
A dominating force a few years back, Merriman has worn out his welcome in San Diego seeing as how the Chargers drafted his replacement in the 2009 draft in Larry English.
The Browns have major issues at linebacker including depth and getting a crazy, berzerker like Merriman would only make the Browns defense meaner and more aggressive.
Other linebackers to consider: Barrett Ruud (Buccaneers), Larry Foote (Lions), and Derrick Johnson (Chiefs).
The Browns desperately need another quality cornerback opposite of Eric Wright because Brandon McDonald is terrible this season.
Hobbs has proven to be a playmaker at the corner, but he might also have a price tag that may be too hefty for the Browns.
Still, he is young and in the prime of his career and the Browns need to weigh out their options because a starting corner is a need in 2010.
Other cornerbacks to consider: Carlos Rogers (Redskins), Marlin Jackson (Colts), Leigh Bodden (Patriots), and Fabian Washington (Ravens).
Having replaced starter Bob Sanders since he was injured and now out for the season, Bethea has become a force of nature just like Sanders.
Great speed, big hits, and he is still really young and learning the position, but his time learning from Sanders would be invaluable while playing with the Browns.
It looks like current starter Brodney Pool is having many concussion issues and the Browns will probably not re-sign him for 2010 which makes room for Bethea to step right in to start.
Other safeties to consider: Eric Berry (The fans choice via NFL Draft), Nick Collins (Packers), and Dawan Landry (Ravens).
