Multiple sources are reporting that Notre Dame has fired head coach Charlie Weis after five seasons.

There were rumors that Weis had cleared out his office prior to departing to Stanford to face the Cardinal on Saturday evening, and that Weis would not be recruiting on the West Coast following the game, an indication that there was already no plan to retain Weis at the end of the year.

No official word has come from the Notre Dame athletic department, but that information appears to be a formality. ESPN's Joe Schad confirmed the rumor through a separate source earlier today.

Weis was 35-27 with the Fighting Irish, including four straight losses to cap the 2009 season, and hadn't reached a BCS bowl since 2006.

The status of his replacement is up in the air. The Bleacher Report relayed a story from Notre Dame's Scout page earlier today alleging that Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops has agreed verbally to a contract with the ND administration through a third party.
