I admit to never grasping the concept of Thanksgiving as a kid. I knew it had something to do with the Pilgrims and Indians eating together but much more important to me it meant no school!
Age however brings wisdom and as I grew older I came to better understand the meaning of Thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving meant football!
So, I did what every self-respecting man does on the final Thursday of November. I started making a habit of over-eating and spending the day in front of the TV! After getting tired of watching the Lions go 0 for Thanksgiving, however, I just spent the day over-eating and over-sleeping.
To me, it was Thanks-for-a-Day-to-Over-Indulge Day.
Now, I get it.
I get why George Washington designated special days for a national thanksgiving. Why Abraham Lincoln proclaimed Thanksgiving as a national holiday to be celebrated the last Thursday in November.
I get it and I appreciate it.
So, it is with this new-found appreciation for a national day dedicated to giving thanks that I present not just my personal Clipper related thanks, but my hopes for the team as well. Where thanks is about looking back and at the present—hope is about looking forward.
The following are my Clipper Thanksgiving AND Hopegiving wishes for the season.
...Eric Gordon and Blake Griffin will be in uniform soon. Gordon within a few days and Griffin within a month or so. We will finally see the real 2009-2010 LA Clipper team take the floor.
...Chris Kaman, Al Thornton, Baron Davis and everyone else who wears the red white and blue can stay healthy before, during and after the pair arrives.
...Ralph Lawler and Mike Smith are back behind the mike where they belong.
...they don't open mouth and insert foot again November 29 when the Memphis Grizzlies and Hamed Haddadi visit Staples for "Iranian Heritage Day".
...a respectable 6-9 record given the teams injuries this year. It could have been much worse.
Take the starting off-guard (Gordon), power-forward (Griffin) and key bench contributor (Kareem Rush) from most any NBA team and they will struggle!
...a seven game win streak that causes a rumble in the league. The team already has two in a row and only have one team in their next five with a winning record, Houston at 8-6.
...Mike Dunleavy is still at the helm. He built this team and deserves a shot at winning with them whole and healthy.
...another team "hiccup" due to injuries or a just a bad run doesn't cause a knee-jerk reaction that sees Dunleavy dismissed.
I guess it's a good thing Fox doesn't own the team or we might have seen Dunleavy gone at the first sign of a loss or some offensive comment.
...a nice three year draft run by the Clippers. Al Thornton, Eric Gordon and Blake Griffin represent the teams future as well as a real turn-around in the teams draft fortunes. Isn't that the reason for the draft, to inject life into losing franchises?
... the teams draft success continues in 2010 and beyond!
...Chris Kaman is emerging as a quality NBA center. Known as much for his skill on the court as his long flowing mane (which flows no more).
...he earns his rightful place in the All-Star game in Dallas.
...an amazing venue to watch the team play. Staples Center is incredible.
...someone finds a way to inject some life into the games. The environment for Clipper games isn't horrible but it's not all that engaging either.
... the best and most logical place for LeBron to call home in 2010-2011 is Los Angeles playing for the Clippers.
Don't believe me?

... LeBron realizes it, signs with the Clippers and then is eternally grateful to me for making it so obvious to him!
...a platform like Bleacher Report to wax on eloquently like I do so frequently.
Well, like I have been known to from time to time.
Ok, like I hope to one day!
...each of you who took the time to read this have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday!
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!!
