November 24, 1991: Monica Seles Wins Tennis Record $2,457,758 in a Year

JoeSportsFan by Senior Analyst Written on November 24, 2009

November 24, 1991

On this day, Monica Seles won the Virginia Slims Championships at Madison Square Gardens and added to her aggregate win total for 1991.  Her total of $2,457,758 set a new female tennis winning record.  Her total is even more amazing, considering that the 2009 leader (Serena Williams) has accumulated $6,545,586 – which is only a 166% increase since 1991.

On the baseball side, the top 2009 yearly income (Alex Rodriguez, $32,000,000) is 451% higher than its 1991 counterpart (Bobby Bonilla, $5,800,000).  Granted, women’s tennis isn’t a salaried sport like Major League Baseball, but you get the point.

Maybe you don’t…in which case we’ll parlay a Monica Seles mention into a reference of the great “Lip Reader” Seinfeld episode in which Kramer becomes a ball boy.

Fantastic fantastic stuff.
