So, I'm leafing through my mail after returning from a business trip the other day, and I received a letter from the Athletic Administration. It was in a funny envelope to be coming from the Athletic Administration - looked like an invitation envelope. I figured it was an invitation to the pre-season football banquet or something along those lines.

(Aside: I don't go to the banquets. I think they're great and a good way to give some extra cash to the student-athletes, but I always tend to think the banquets are more for the heavy-hitter donors and family, neither category of which I fall in to. Plus, I find it a little creepy. I'm not quite to the level of fandom - yet - where I attend spring games or attend banquets. I'll get there eventually, I'm sure.)

At any rate, I open up the envelope and it's this very non-descript looking card from the Athletic Department, in blue and gold, with the 'Champions Made Here' seal. I open it up, and it's a Thank You Letter.

The Thank you Letter reads: Thank You for being a part of our Bruin Family.

Cool enough.

But then here was the nice touch: It was signed by Brigham Harwell. And he left a little blurb also thanking me for contributing to the success of the program, etc. etc.

It was cool, but at the same time, a little weird. I'm probably no more than 5 years older than Brigham Harwell. The thought of him thanking me when he probably could just as easily rip my left arm out of its socket is a bit.....I dunno, strange. I don't really think of myself as doing much for the football and athletic department apart from giving some donations during the course of the year and scoring some pretty sweet tickets to the Rose Bowl.

But regardless, it was still somewhat cool. I hope the Athletic Department does more outreach to alumni. If there's one thing I always thought that UCLA lacked (at least compared to Georgia's alumni association and athletic department), it's that there's not really a sense of 'community' beyond a handful of influential boosters and backers.
