The 2009 Mets season was certainly a season Mets fans around the country would like to forget. Near the beginning of the season a lot was expected of the Mets, Sports Illustrated even predicted them to be the World Series Champs.

This season went down the drain when the Mets suffered the losses of key players Carlos Beltran, John Maine, Jose Reyes, Carlos Delgado and many more. The Mets had to play guys like Nelson Figueroa and Wilson Valdez in their absences.

Mets fans would just like to put this season behind us and see what Omar can do for the team this offseason. So I decided to make my own Opening Day Starting Lineup that the Mets should have next season.

C—Yorvit Torrealba

91834002

Torrealba was a member of the Rockies this season and formerly a member for the Giants and Mariners. There are other possible free agent catchers available such as former Met Ramon Castro, Ivan Rodriguez and Bengie and Jose Molina but I believe Torrealba would best fit the Mets.

The Mets may have something in Omir Santos at catcher having batted .254 with seven home runs and 40 RBI. I believe if the Mets were to pick up Torrealba they would probably be platoned.

Torrealba batted .291 this season in 213 at bats while hitting for two home runs and thirty-one RBI. Torrealba also had a 1.000 Field Percentage.

1B—Nick Johnson

90186026

While Dan Murphy did have a solid season this year I believe Johnson would be the better player for the Mets. The Mets should sign Johnson to a one or two year deal and then try Murphy at it. Other free agent first basemen are Hank Blalock, Adam LaRoche, Nomar Garciapara and Carlos Delgado. While I do think if the Mets brought Delgado back he would still be a solid player Johnson is a cheaper option and is much younger.

Johnson played for both the Nationals and the Marlins this season. Johnson has also played for the Yankees. This season Johnson batted .291 in 574 at bats with eighth home runs and 62 RBI. Johnson missed all of the 2007 MLB season due to a broken leg.

2B—Luis Castillo

90701641

Castillo has been a member of the Mets since the middle of the 2007 MLB season. The Mets acquired Castillo for two minor leaguers. After that season the Mets signed Castillo to an astounding $25 million dollar, four year deal. Many Mets fans wish Castillo's contract would be traded to another team because it is so expensive but Castillo had a very good year last year.
Orlando Hudson is to be a free agent and I guarantee you that all Mets fans would love to trade Castillo's contract and pick up Hudson but no team would take that contract.

Alex Cora played a big role on the Mets when Castillo was injured but I don't expect to see him back with the Mets next year. Castillo batted .317 in 357 at bats with 33 RBIs and 13 stolen bases this season.

SS—Jose Reyes

88516900

Reyes has been a member of the Mets since 2003. Reyes was one of the players on the Mets last season that was frequently hurt and hardly ever played. Reyes only played in 33 of the 162 games this season.

I think it would be a smart thing for the Mets to pick up a player like Alex Gonzalez this offseason to be his back-up just in case he suffers another injury. Gonzalez played for both the Red Sox and Reds this season. Gonzalez batted a mere .238 last season but had eighth home runs and 41 RBI. If Reyes can forget about the injury he will have another one of his All-Star seasons.

Reyes batted .286 this season in 1440 at bats with 15 RBI and 11 stolen bases.

3B—David Wright

89780515

Wright has been a member of the Mets since the end of the 2004 MLB season. Wright was the Mets only star player that played for most of the season. Wright was named to his fourth All-Star team this season.

Wright played in 144 of the games this season batting .307 with 10 home runs, 72 RBI and 27 stolen bases.

LF—Matt Holliday

91567842

Holliday was a member of the Athletics and Cardinals this season. Another player who could fill the role at left field for the Mets is Jason Bay, a former draft pick of the Mets. Holliday is probably going to be the most sought out player this offseason by any team.

As of now his former team, the Cardinals are still saying they would like to bring Holliday back. If I were Omar this would be the one player I'd keep my
focus on. The Mets used such players as Gary Sheffield and Fernando Tatis
during the season in left. Holliday batted .313 this season in 581 at bats with 24 home runs and 109 RBI.

CF—Carlos Beltran

88970642

Beltran has been a member of the Mets since the 2005 MLB season. Beltran made his fifth All-Star game of his career this season along with David Wright and K-Rod. Beltran only played in 81 games due to an injury. When Beltran suffered his injury this season the Mets decided to put Angel Pagan in center. Pagan had a very good season last year and expect him to be Beltran's backup.

Beltran batted .325 this season in 308 at bats with 10 home runs, 48 RBI and 11 stolen bases.

R—Jeff Francoeur

90701417

Francoeur was acquired this season from the Atlanta Braves for Ryan Church. Before we received Francoeur for Church, Chruch was a pretty good player but I believ Francoeur is part of the future of this team along with Wright and Reyes. Francoeur played very well after coming to the Mets and Mets fans noticed. Francoeur became the number two guy on the team after David Wright.

Francoeur batted .280 this season in 593 at bats with 15 home runs and 76 RBI.
