As the dust settles in Paris, the English summer is sunny and warm. I wanted to write a closure for this year’s Roland Garros by analyzing the class performance. It's the dreaded moment for each of us when we were (or still are) in school…
- Class Topper (A+): Straight A’s in each midterm, teacher’s favorite, answers every question in class feverishly, topped the class by a long margin, even answered the extra bonus points question in the final exam to score 120/100—Rafa Nadal. He is looking forward to top the class in the upcoming final exam too, but that’s not his top favorite subject.
- The kid who wanted to top the class, but ended up second by a long margin (A-): Tried hard in every midterm and scored very well, diligently attended every class and took notes, came all prepared for the final exam that let him down. It is not the only final he has blown in school, ended up a respectable second in class (but by a fair distance from the class topper). He vows he will top the next final coming around, as he claims it's his favorite subject—Roger Federer
- Slightly better than the Blue Collar B (B+): Ended up with a B+ in class at the end of the semester, the best of the rest. He found answers to the questions as time was running out in the exam, which was his downfall. He believed he could have gotten A-, if he had the right set of questions. A long way away from the class topper, still a very respectable score. He has a good chance of improving his B+, in the upcoming class—Novak Djokovic
- B/R Ticket Guide
- Blue Collar B (B): Tried very hard all through the semester for a well earned Blue Collar (the phrase suits his style of play too) B. Could not have done any better, for he isn’t the sharpest tool in the shed, but did himself and his countrymen proud—‘Sliderman’ Gael Monfils
- Just Below Average (B-): Smart and very intelligent, answered some very tough questions for a while, but inconsistent and patchy when considering the entire semester’s performance—Gonzo
- Fail (D): Nalbandian, Blake and Bhagdatis, patchy performances in one the midterms and failed the next two. Much left to be desired, well below what they expected out of themselves.
- Lowest Score in a Midterm: Almagro, woke up at the wrong side of the bed and blew the midterm big time. May be the questions were too hard, but he ought to have performed better. A score of 3 on 18 (16%) is unacceptable.
- Under-grad who performed well in a Grad Course: Had no background on the subject, but was innately smart and performed admirably in a class full of grad students. Bodes well for the future, when he will take more graduate classes…his mate with whom he studied when he was young is already in graduate school—Gulbis
- Honorable Mention: Lost most of his books days before the exam, still decided to rock up to the exam and give his best shot, performed very well in the midterms and almost passed the class, but the Professor gave him permission to drop the class in the end—Lleyton Hewitt
‘Au Revoir’ everyone, I’ll be back next week in all whites, with strawberries and champagne. Book your tickets for a small trip across the channel from Paris to London.
So long, and thanks for all the fish! I have loved sharing my thoughts with you.
