I've been wondering lately: do the majority of MMA fans all suffer from some form of bipolar disorder?
In light of the recent loss to Fedor Emelianenko on the CBS production of Strikeforce , Brett "The Grim" Rogers must be swirling in absolute confusion as to how he has been perceived and described by the fans over the past few weeks.
“Bipolar disorder (also known as manic depression) causes serious shifts in mood, energy, thinking, and behavior–from the highs of mania on one extreme, to the lows of depression on the other. More than just a fleeting good or bad mood, the cycles of bipolar disorder last for days, weeks, or months. And unlike ordinary mood swings, the mood changes of bipolar disorder are so intense that they interfere with your ability to function.”
I’m sure right about now, many of you are asking yourselves, “What the heck is this guy saying and/or smoking?”
Well in case you are unfamiliar with this particular medical condition, please note the following signs and symptoms:
· Feeling unusually “high” and optimistic OR extremely irritable
· Unrealistic, grandiose beliefs about one’s abilities or powers
· Feeling hopeless, sad, or empty
· Racing thoughts; jumping quickly from one idea to the next
· Impaired judgment and impulsiveness
· Delusions and hallucinations (in severe cases)
Still not convinced?
Allow me to shed some light on my suspicions by sharing some of the comments that have been made about Brett Rogers spanning the past few weeks.
UFC Fanboys Before the Fight
“Rogers is going to destroy Fedor...Fedor is over-hyped...Fedor doesn’t need to worry about coming to the UFC to fight the best Heavyweights in the world—he won’t even make it past Rogers...Until Fedor does come to the UFC however, I can not respect his accomplishments-to-date...He has fought a bunch of has-beens and never-was’s...Fedor is scared about losing his legacy...Rogers will smash a hole through Fedor with his superior power and striking skills...Rogers will be Fedor’s toughest test yet...Rogers is too good for Fedor...Fedor would never beat Brock Lesnar.”
Fedor Fanboys Before the Fight
“Rogers is nothing compared to Fedor...He shouldn’t even be fighting Fedor considering that they are not even close to the same caliber of fighter...Fedor is the top of the elite...Rogers is lucky to be in the same ring as him...Fedor can out punch, out move and out wrestle Rogers in a heartbeat...It won’t even be close...Screw Lesnar.”
UFC Fanboys After the Fight
“Rogers is a chump...He tested Fedor a bit in the first round, but lacked the conditioning and skill to even be in a fight of that level...Rogers had no business being in that ring to begin with...He is another minor-league athlete that Fedor has used to pad his record with...Rogers isn’t even a top-20 fighter...Bring on Lesnar!”
Fedor Fanboys After the Fight
“Fedor is G-O-D!!! But Rogers was definitely his toughest opponent yet and this win only solidifies Fedor’s reign as the greatest fighter to ever live in this Universe!!!...Hat’s off to Rogers for being a solid No. 2 ranked fighter...Rogers was in amazing shape and proved he is one of the best...Rogers would kill Lesnar—imagine what Fedor would do to him. I can’t wait to hug his nuts!”
Sorry, I couldn’t resist that last one...haha.
Suggesting that the “fans” have bipolar disorder is admittedly a huge stretch (although, in some unfortunate cases, I am sure that it is true and a laughing matter it is not).
The point here is simple: I feel that it is completely laughable at how some of the fans (aka “fanboys”) seem to flip-flop back and forth making whatever excuses they need to in order to keep their opinions and pride in tact. This is ridiculous. Learn to give credit where credit is due.
The Truth About Fedor
Fedor may be the best of all time, but until he makes his way over to the UFC, this level of debate will rage on forever and the UFC fanboys will not be completely unjustified in any accusations that they may make about Fedor. The longer it takes, the more the excuses will follow (from both sides)—regardless of any fight outcomes.
The sooner Fedor goes to the UFC, the better for the UFC, the better for Fedor, and the better for MMA fans.
The Truth about Brett
Back to the drawing board for one of the toughest men ever to take a punch like the one that Fedor delivered and who still managed to walk away seemingly coherent. A bit of continued training in the basics will fundamentally develop Rogers into one of the best fighters on the planet.
Just not the best.
Those are my opinions. If you don’t like them—I have others.
