Sources close to BloodyElbow have confirmed that a Middleweight clash between top contenders Nate Mardquart & Chael Sonnen is in the works for the UFC 110 card scheduled to take place in Sydney, Australia and both men are awaiting fight agreements at this current stage.
Nate "The Great" Mardquart has been on a three fight win streak over top name opponents, in his last outing he stopped Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner Demian Maia in 21 seconds with one punch which to many earned him the right to face Middleweight kingpin Anderson Silva but with Silva having surgery and likely facing fellow Brazillian Vitor Belfort in his return bout it seems Mardquart has to fight to earn his shot at the Crown once more.
Chael Sonnen has always been a talented fighter but never really considered a top contender for the UFC Middleweight strap but now seems to be his time to change that, he has won four of his last five outings in both the UFC & WEC over the likes of Dan Miller, Yushin Okami & Paulo Filho and now has his eyes poised on Mardquart. Leading into his bout with Mardquart he will be considered a huge underdog which could also work in his favour with less stress and no pressure about the outcome.
In my humble opinion, as good as Sonnen is he is not going to stop the raging bull that is Nate Mardquart. Mardquart has been on a reign of terror since his loss to UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva taking opponents like Gouveia, Maia & Kampmann and overwhelming them with the power in his hands.
Also scheduled thus far for the Australian debut on February 21, 2010 is "The Axe Murderer" Wanderlei Silva looking to get back on track as he faces Yoshihiro Akiyama, Mirko "Cro Cop" Flipovik looks to stop newcomer to the UFC Ben Rothwell & Ultimate Fighter alumnis are set to collide as Stephan Bonner faces Krzysztof Soszynski.
