I know it is still the beginning of a young offseason, but you can bet Theo Epstein has made up his mind on a list of players he wants, and doesn't want. We learned a week ago that Jeremy Hermida was on the 'Want' list. We are all anxious about seeing what our lineup will look like next season, it will look something like this.
Batting Leadoff, Center Fielder Jacoby Ellsbury
After having his first full-time season at center field, Jacoby Ellsbury seams like a lock at this position. He hit .301 and stole 70 bases, a new Red Sox record.
One thing to watch out for: He has poor patience at the plate, and has only got 49 BB last season.
Batting Second, Second Baseman Dustin Pedroia
Following two great seasons in which he earned a Rookie of the Year, MVP, Gold Glove, and Louisville Slugger isn't easy, but Dustin Pedroia did his best. He dropped .030 points in the AVG column as well .050 in his OPS column. It seemed as if he had a more patient approach as he got 24 more BB more than last year.
One thing to watch out for: Can he get the ball up enough to bang off the wall as he did in '08?
Batting Third, Catcher Victor Martinez
After being acquired by the Red Sox, V-Mart did nothing more than deliver, earning himself a .912 OPS. I would say the faith of the Red Sox season depends on that number.
Battin Cleanup, First Baseman Kevin Youkilis
As MLB 09 The Show says, in 2006 he was known for his eye at the plate, in 2007 for not making an error, in 2008 for his power, and in 2009 he was known for... all of the above. Expect him to be the horse of this ballclub.
Batting 5th, Left Fielder Jason Bay
Jason Bay was a very streaky hitter last season, one month he would crush the ball every game, the next he would strikeout at least twice each day. He ended up hitting 36 HR and striking out 162 times. Expect him to be no different next year.
Batting 6th, DH David Ortiz
He has lost his edge up there, but he still has a couple more seasons left in him. I will go big and say he will have a better year than 2007.
Batting 7th Third Baseman Mike Lowell
He will be healthy and back from that hip surgery. He will have less starts, but will produce about the same.
Batting 8th Right Fielder J.D. Drew
Probably the most expensive 8th hitter in baseball, but he ain't no slouch. He is very clutch and a lefty power bat.
Batting 9th, Shortstop Alex Gonzalez
If the Red Sox think that a defensive shortstop is more important than a offensive one, he is the man.
