San Francisco Giants phenom Tim Lincecum has left the team and will miss his next scheduled start, it was announced Tuesday.
The emerging ace was expected to take the mound Wednesday against Colorado. However, a Giants spokesman says Lincecum was offered, and has accepted, the role of Cameron in the upcoming sequel to Ferris Bueller's Day Off. The movie will be shot in Chicago over the coming months, and is scheduled to hit the big screen early in the summer of 2009.
Alan Ruck was originally cast as Bueller's sidekick in the 1986 Golden Globe-nominated film. However, his 1956 D.O.B. and graying hair have made him an unrealistic option for John Hughes' sequel. Lincecum, on the other hand, will turn 24 next week, but looks more like a Ferrari-abuser than a Cy-Young candidate.
The movie's director says Lincecum was the obvious choice as Ruck's replacement.
"He's a doppelganger. Honestly, my son was watching the game on TV a few weeks ago when he suddenly turned to me and asked what Cameron was doing pitching for the Giants," recalled Hughes.
"My people called his people the next morning, and that was that."
Lincecum is currently 8-1 with 83 strikeouts and a 2.15 ERA. He leads San Francisco in all three categories.
This will be his first feature film.
