ARCADIA, Calif.(AP) — Midday has won the $2 million Filly & Mare
Turf, snapping an 0 for 6 streak in the Breeders’ Cup by veteran
European trainer Henry Cecil.
Ridden by Thomas Queally, Midday came up along the rail to beat
Pure Clan by a length Friday at Santa Anita. The 3-year-old
Britain-bred ran 1\005C\005C miles in 1:59.14 and paid $6.60, $4.80 and
$3 as the co-2-1 wagering choice, the first favorite to win
after upsets in the first three races.
Pure Clan, ninth in the race last year, returned $7.80 and $4.
Defending champion Forever Together, the other favorite, paid
$2.40 to show.
Britain-bred Visit was fourth in the field of eight for Hall of
Fame trainer Bobby Frankel, who has been away from his stable
most of the year with an undisclosed illness.
