Not Your Average Homecoming

Earlier this decade, the idea of long-term Red Wings Chris Chelios and Manny Legace playing for a minor league team from Chicago might have seemed a little far-fetched.
But, that's where they are, and tonight they'll invade Van Andel Arena to face off with the Grand Rapids Griffins. The Griffins are flying high at home this season, off to a franchise best 5-0 start in Grand Rapids. Meanwhile, the Wolves bring an 0-4 road record to the table.
What makes this storyline interesting is that the Griffins are the Red Wings' AHL affiliate team, and both Chelios and Legace spent rehab/conditioning stints in Grand Rapids. Chelios' run with the Griffins was just last season.
Chelios signed with the Wolves after no NHL team showed interest in him when the Wings released him during the off-season. He wanted to play in or near Chicago, to stay near his family.
He's doing a good job of proving that he's not done yet, logging 5 points and a team high plus 7 over five games with Chicago.
