For those of you who don’t know, I am an Iowa Hawkeye fan. I have been and always will be. Now, as a Hawk fan I am seeing more and more of these anti-Iowa articles that are coming out of nowhere. They all have the same formula, some miss a few points, and others add irrelevant points that help prove they don’t know what they are talking about, but they all have the same message they don’t think Iowa is legit.

Now before I start, can anyone explain to me the big threat Iowa poses? Let’s put it this way, Iowa will have a game in the Rose Bowl if they win out, despite being overrated or underrated. However the difference is when they play and that decision resides with Florida, Alabama, and Texas.

Step 1: Address Iowa’s Close Wins

This is a great way to help prove your point. Whether people like it or not style points are part of the game, and Iowa is lacking in that department.

Every Iowa hater knows that Iowa has close games with five of their opponents Northern Iowa, Arkansas State, Michigan, Michigan State, and Indiana.

Now you don’t necessarily have to include all of these games in fact it’s recommended you don’t. The reason you may want to omit some of these games is the score in some of these games didn’t show the true game. Arkansas State and Michigan are the two that should be removed from your list because in neither game was Iowa in danger of being beaten.

The most important game to include would be UNI, in the first game of the year Iowa played the University on Northern Iowa and all you need to know is that Iowa had to block two back to back field goals to get the win against a FCS team.

The next game that could be used in your article would be Michigan State, in this game it came all the way down to the wire as Iowa had to score a touchdown on fourth down with two seconds left on the clock to win.

The final game to include would be the Indiana game, in this game Iowa had to come from 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter, but that’s not why this game is added, this game is added due to the controversial calls that some feel caused Iowa to win the game. However it is cautionary to use the Indiana game, I would recommend at least looking at the videos that caused some to believe Indiana got shafted. The reason you should look at the videos is some people believe most of the calls were correct and if you are one of those people don’t include this game because Iowa ended up winning by 18 points.

Step 2: Knowing Iowa’s Big Wins

This is your hardest part of the article. This is the part where you look at Iowa’s schedule and try and convince your readers that Iowa’s wins aren’t very impressive.

Now if you’ve never seen Iowa’s schedule you wouldn’t understand why this is the hardest part to write about. Iowa currently has beaten BCS No. 11 Penn State on the road 21-10, BCS-ranked No. 18 Arizona at home 27-17, and BCS-ranked No. 21 Wisconsin 20-10 on the road.

You could be thinking why do I need to write about those? The answer is you don’t, but if you want to look like you’re not being biased you should give Iowa credit for these wins.

Or, you could try and convince your readers that a win at Penn State, at Wisconsin, and against Arizona isn’t as impressive as it looks. Now this is by no means an easy task, but I’ve seen many anti-Iowa articles and the ones that address these wins try and convince their readers that the Big Ten is a weak conference. By convincing your readers that the Big Ten is weak you have eliminated Penn State and Wisconsin as quality wins.

That leaves No. 18 Arizona, now if you look at Arizona’s schedule you can see that they have yet to play there strongest competition so you could argue that they won on easy wins.

So as you can see it is possible to try and reduce Iowa’s big wins but it’s easier to give credit and move on to better points.

Step 3: Attacking the Computers

If you haven’t seen the computer rankings for Iowa, here are the rankings: Anderson & Hester has Iowa ranked second, Richard Billingsley has them ranked fourth, Colley Matrix second, Kenneth Massey second, Jeff Sagarin second, and Peter Wolfe first.

In fact the only team with a better computer ranking is Florida.

So if you want to improve your anti-Iowa article you need to prove to your readers that the unbiased computers don’t know anything.

This job is made easier by knowing that the computers don’t factor in margin of victory. This is the basis of all arguments against the computers, however you are still trying to prove that not all wins are equal, which makes this a little more challenging, but it’s so much more rewarding knowing your capable of beating technology.

Step 4: The Extras

This is what separates your anti-Iowa article from the others. This is where you add your own little flavor.

There is no necessity to adding this part in your article, but if you don’t, there is no separation from your article and any other anti-Iowa article.

Unfortunately I cannot give you any ideas because as soon as I do you will no longer be able separate your article from mine. So be creative and have fun.
