CTV Saves Hockey Night in Canada Theme Song

Matt EichelSenior Writer IJune 9, 2008

No longer will Hockey Night In Canada's intro garner the traditional 'Hockey Theme Song' as it has for the last 40 years.

CTV Incorporated, along with Copyright Music & Visuals, announced that CTV Inc. has acquired the rights to the long-standing HNIC anthem.

The song, created by Dolores Claman in 1968, will now be used for hockey broadcasts on TSN and RDS.  It will also be utilized during the upcoming 2010 Olympic Games.

"Throughout our negotiations, CTV displayed a tremendous amount of respect for my family and the song. 'The Hockey Theme' means so much to Canadians, and we know it's in good hands with CTV." commented Claman.

This announcement is in line with TSN's new six-year multi-platform NHL deal which features more coverage of Canadian teams than ever before.  Earlier this year, RDS re-upped their exclusive agreement to broadcast Montreal Canadiens games as well.
