We Have Seen This Before: Remember Eddie

Hi.

The Batista heel turn has been okay. It has not been the best heel turn by any stretch of the imagination, nor is it the worst. It has been very passable.

However, one thing is striking me: the similarities between this and the late Eddie Guerrero heel turn in 2005. Now of heel turns to copy, that is a good one because it was one of the best heel turns we have had.

The way it was done was clever and it was a role that Eddie played to absolute perfection. Eddie produced a fine heel performance.

Before that I would only been watching wrestling for a while and felt Eddie was a little one-dimensional. However after the turn heel I suddenly realised what a true star Eddie actually was.

In my view he produced possibly one of the greatest heel promos I have ever seen. Watch this promo how many people could pull off a promo of this quality. Answer: very few.

Personally, that is my favourite promo ever.

Batista is taking on a fairly similar sociopath gimmick. He is not a monster by any means. Batista feels like he has been stabbed in the back and frustrated he cannot win the title.

Eddie was frustrated about not being able to beat Rey. Either way, neither could/can get what they need.

Both these heel turns were built up fairly well. It was obvious that Batista was going to turn heel just as it was obvious Eddie was going to turn heel after Wrestlemania.

Both involved attacks on Rey albeit Eddie's has far more brutal. Sadly, I couldn't find a vid of the attack itself but if you can find the video it is worth watching.

This is a vid encompassing the whole Eddie/Rey feud. It does have some of the attack in it as well as showing the progression of the feud nicely.

There was the Dominic aspect added to the feud. This was a gamble for the WWE as the feud was strong.

A couple of times I felt that it detracted from the overall quality of the feud, but overall it was a gamble that paid off. The ladder match the two had was a brilliant one.

The Eddie/Rey feud was a very strong one. Batista has started this feud in the right sort of way. He could of done with a stronger attack on Rey when he did turn heel his attack was fairly weak compared to what it could have been.

He could have really looked dominant, but he didn't. He needs to really work hard and get this feud as strong as it could be.

Last week, the promo (ironically where Eddie was mentioned) gave this feud a much-needed boost. Personally, I think that Batista needs to produce a attack similar to what Sheamus produced on Jaime Noble. That would give the feud another boost.

The feud will never be as good as the original, though.
