Even though Pete Sampras was the five time defending Champion going into the 1999 Wimbledon Final against his fellow American Andre Agassi, many gave Agassi the edge going into the title match. Agassi had just won the French Open for the 1st time in his career, and his victory over Pat Rafter in the Semis had ensured that he would become the new world number 1 after Wimbledon. Sampras however played some inspired tennis to save three break points and win the 1set set 6-3. The American was able to maintain that form as he won the 2nd set 6-4 and the 3rd set 7-5. It was Sampras's 6th Wimbledon title in 7 years and the American later said that it was the best tennis that he ever played. Agassi would never reach another Wimbledon final, but he did gain some kind of consolation for his Wimbledon defeat by upsetting the Betting Odds and winning his 2nd US Open title a couple of months later.
