Fourteen games into the 2009-10 NHL season, the Washing Capitals are flying high over the nations capital, as well as most of the NHL with 20 points, second to only the Pittsburgh Penguins, who have 22.  They are far and away the best team in the Southeast division, hoholding an impressive 8-2-4 record.  Washington would obviously be a solid team without Alex, but he is the single best player in the NHL, there is no argument to be made because he has proved it.Ovechkin leads the league in goals with 14, and in total points with 23.  Alexander the great is tied for second in the league in plus/minus, an overlooked statistic, especially when it comes to superstars.  Ryan Howard has incredible power numbers but never hits .280, as an example.  Alex Ovechkin has all the power numbers, even nine assists in fourteen games isn't too shabby.  What may come even more impressively is that plus/minus stat, or maybe him leading the league with 86 shots, 27 more than second place Zach Parise who has 59.  Usually that is not a good stat with a player taking so many shots but 14 for 86 as a percentage is amazing in the NHL. My guess is that Ovechkin will keep doing it, maybe not on this pace, but he will get his 100 points and be the MVP of the league like he should be.  The Capitals ride into the playoffs, and we see what happens form there.  But for now, we all know who the best player in the league is, and especially in this young season.  It is the man himself, Alex Ovechkin.
