A Pair Of 'Cane Comebacks On Halloween Weekend
When Jacory Harris led his Hurricanes down the field to erase an almost two touchdown deficit on Saturday against Wake Forest, who could know it would be only the second most surprising victory to come for the team this past weekend?
On the tail end of celebrations after that 28-27 win over the Demon Deacons, Miami fans might have gotten a second wind after reports came out today that the team had received a verbal commitment from star prep running back Storm Johnson.
What makes this commitment different than any other for Miami fans is that it seems to have come out of nowhere. Much like that incredible fourth down catch by Aldarius Johnson, the younger Johnson is one Storm that certainly is a pleasant surprise to the people of Miami. (I know, horrible, but get ready for at least three years of terrible puns. I'm just warming you all up).
What makes his pledge such a surprise is that Johnson has had a very strange recruitment process, to say the least. The Hurricanes only really jumped on board about a month ago according to reports, well after Johnson's commitment, and subsequent de-commitment from LSU. What exactly happened with Storm and LSU isn't clear, but their loss is certainly looking like Miami's gain.
Johnson is a bigger back, but one with the athletic skills of one much smaller. Terrific feet and balance and good breakaway speed are on display if you happen to catch one of the videos of is that have popped up on various 'Canes message boards around the web.
The offense struggled to find a running game this weekend without leading rusher Javarris James, which may have contributed to Johnson's decision to pull the trigger for Miami. James will be gone and Graig Cooper a senior a year from now, with the other backs on the roster basically unproven, though extremely talented.
Having a back like Johnson, who at 6'1", 215 appears ready to contribute, to go with the speedy Cooper, rising star Damian Berry, and two other youngsters in Mike James and Lamar Miller will certainly make things a lot easier on Jacory Harris getting this team to the elite level.
Harris showed on Saturday why there are so many people calling for 2010 to be the best since that streak of dominance in the early 00s. The idea of such a loaded backfield should have fans both dreaming about the future, and mindful of the similarities to what they saw a decade ago.
