The American Southwest Conference has announced its Football Players of the Week Awards for games through October 31, 2009.
Howard Payne quarterback Zach Hubbard and safety Jordan Pfenenger were named the Offensive and Defense Players of the Week, respectively.
Louisiana College kick/punt returner Jordan Rideaux and Mary Hardin-Baylor kick/punt returner shared the Special Teams Player of the Week honors.
Hubbard (Shepherd, Texas, Shephard High School) was 27 of 50 passing for 453 yards and five touchdowns without an interception to lead a 38-24 upset road win over nationally-ranked Mississippi College. Hubbard, who takes the league’s top weekly award for the second straight time, also ran nine times for 33 yards. Two of his scoring tosses came in the fourth quarter to break open a 26-24 game.
Pfenenger (Brownwood, Texas, Early High School) posted two interceptions to help lead the Yellow Jackets to a 38-24 upset road win over nationally-ranked Mississippi College. Pfenenger, who also had a pair of tackles, spearheaded a unit that picked off Adam Shaffer five times and shut out the Choctaws in the fourth quarter. Shaffer had been picked off just three times in 240 attempts entering the game and MC had scored in its previous six quarters. Pfenenger is one of only six players in the ASC this season to record a multiple-interception game.
Rideaux (Carencro, Louisiana , Carencro High School) returned a punt 70 yards for a touchdown to help the Wildcats record a 26-0 home win over Sul Ross State. Rideaux, who takes the league’s top weekly special teams award for the second time, totaled 100 yards on four punt returns and 25 on one kick return. He is the only player in the ASC to have returned a punt and a kick back for a score. On the offensive side of the ball, Rideaux caught eight passes for 172 yards and a TD.
Tucker (Caldwell, Texas, Caldwell High School) returned a punt 47 yards for a touchdown to open the scoring in a 52-10 home win over East Texas Baptist. Tucker provided the only scoring of the first quarter with his return and totaled 51 yards in punt returns and 20 on a kickoff return. On the offensive side of the ball, he ran for 46 yards and a score on eight carries for the nationally-ranked Cru.
