The Agony Of UGA Football

As a Dawgs fan, it has been a long season already. The systemic failures of this team are a textbook case of what happens with poor coaching and team morale. Aside from the performances of a few individual players, the Georgia Bulldogs look to all the world, like a third world nation on the verge of implosion.

As a Dawgs fan, you may rest assured that those words you just read, did not come easily or frivolously. They are not the result of mere vanity or poor sportsmanship. They are from the heart of someone who feels the painful slice of this blade of honesty that cuts both ways.

But, it is just a game, right? We can just as easily now go back to our lives knowing that this minor hiccup will not mean anything beyond the score of a contest that is one of many that has already come and many yet to come (Deep breath!).

Well, that is what I told myself before sitting to bang out this postmortem. And for a few brief moments, it did help. It reminded me that I really do have more important things to worry about in life than a sport. As a further reminder, I hugged my wife and emailed my kids to remind them that Pop was okay, after all.

But it was all a pretty big lie, too.

I bleed red and black and when the Dawgs suffer, I suffer. I just can’t help it. I am as much a victim of the problem that has sent this once elite SEC team to the depths of hell as anyone else. So, you will have to forgive me if I am blunt in my assessments and final opinion.

1. Defensive coordinator Willie Martinez must go; Period.

2. Offensive coordinator Mike Bobo is a nice guy but, we need a real coach here;sorry.

3. Continued rumors surrounding AD Damon Evans handcuffing Coach Richt are indeed still unsubstantiated, so far as I can tell anyway, but still, the rumors are troubling. This man’s tenure began with the sacking of Coach Dooley and has gone downhill ever since.

The Georgia Bulldogs are, just as Florida Coach Meyer stated, one of the most talented teams in the nation. The question of ‘why’ they don’t show that on the field is one that eludes us in all, but speculation and opinion.

Personally, I have all the trust and confidence in the world for Coach Mark Richt, but even in this child’s game, there is a point when the howls of the Bulldog Nation must be heard.

I can only hope that once this nightmare season passes, Coach Richt will clean house and bring in some genuine coaching talent to match that of his boys in uniform.
