After struggling past Greg Rusedski in the 3rd round Pete Sampras appeared very lucky still to be involved in his home Grand Slam. Sampras won in 5 sets but following but victory Rusedski made some negative comments about the legendary American.
Sampras stunned the tennis world with his response, he beat Tommy Haas in the 4th round in 4 sets, before dispatching his compatriot, Andy Roddick in the Quarter Finals in straight sets.
Sampras went on to reach the final where he faced his old rival Andre Agassi, and he managed to roll back the years and win in four sets to claim his 14th Grand Slam title.
That title was Sampras's 1st of any kind for two years and many thought that it would be the start of a new lease of life for the American.
But after much deliberation Sampras decided to call time on his career, meaning that he bowed out on the ultimate high Rusedski never managed to upset the Betting Odds and win a Grand Slam title.
