America's John Isner had the finest win of his career when he defeated compatriot Andy Roddick in five sets in the third round of the 2009 US Open.

At 6'9", Isner is one of the tallest players in men's tennis. He had played Roddick on two previous occasions but came up short on both occasions, although their meeting at the Legg Mason ATP event in Washington, D.C. just a few weeks prior to this year's US Open went to three sets.

This time around Isner went two sets to love up and appeared on course for a superb victory against the world No. 5. Roddick, however, as he so often does, fought back by winning the third and fourth sets, and he appeared to be the favourite at this stage to win the match in five sets.

Isner, however, held his nerve and won the fifth set in a tiebreaker to seal the best win of his career and book a place in the fourth round.

It is hard to see Roddick defying the Odds and winning the US Open next year.
