One of the most anticipated rematches in boxing history was shot down on Friday, when WBC Welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather decided to hang up his gloves and walk away from boxing. The 31 year-old seems to be for real this time, unlike his previous two retirement announcements.
Mayweather was scheduled to square off against boxing's "Golden Boy," later this year in the most lucrative rematch in all of boxing. "Pretty Boy Floyd" seems to be disinterested with the overwhelming purse the fight has to offer, which isn't surprising considering the $50 million he received from his fights in 2007.
Mayweather has decided to walk away with an unblemished record (39-0, 25KOs), causing boxing fans to scratch their heads. Is Mayweather really ready to call the quits? Or is he dodging De La Hoya in fear of tarnishing perfection?
Mayweather has not stepped into the ring since the fight in 2007 in which he defeated Ricky Hatton. Since the Hatton fight, Mayweather has been busy "Dancing with the Stars" (or at least trying to) and working on his record deal.
However, I was wrong about his last time in the ring. After Hatton, Mayweather defeated WWE's "Big Show" by catching him with a powerful hook while fashioning a pair of brass knuckles at the most recent Wrestlemania venue. Pretty embarrassing.
Mayweather understands the situation at hand, which is why he is choosing to bow out at this time. He has not been training for what Oscar is going to bring to the ring. So rather than get New England Patriots-ed, he is going to quit while he is ahead.
Floyd's nickname suits him quite well, as he is certainly "pretty." Pretty pitiful.

LOL! This article suits the site quite well, "Bleacher Report". That's exactly wear it belongs, in the bleachers. "Mr. macho" did'nt even leave his name at the end of his article. It's obvious he knows nothing about boxing. Floyd is going to fight Cotto or Margarito in the first quarter if 2009. The reason being, one of those fighters (Cotto/Margarito) who fight July 26th will fight Delahoya on iether Sep 20th or Sept 27th. Oscar will loos that fight for sure. This leaves much build-up for an even bigger, more lucrative pay-day for Mayweather, as though their will be some great match ups for the winner of the Cott/Margarito fight to face, no such match-up can be as competitive and lucrative as a Mayweather-Mega fight. Floyd is simply going to watch the Cotto/Margarito fight closely like the rest of the world and the next day you will find him in his provate gym training specificaly for the winner of that fight for a 2009 blockbuster event...

That's garbage if he were interested in the payday he'd fight Oscar then the winner and collect twice. I think he is fighting a losing battle if he doesn't walk away, because IF he beats Oscar again, then he has to fight the winner of Cotto-Margarito, one of those matches spell blemish for him. I think he will walk away then he will come back after his name dies down a little and comes back to fight a midrank fighter and collect a huge purse keeping his record in tact and being a bigger joke than it was for him to wrestle. If he proves me wrong I will admit it, but for now he is ducking not just Oscar, but Cotto and Margarito as well.

I could be wrong, and I'm not criticizing you even you made a mistake in your article, but I think Floyd Mayweather was on "Dancing with the Stars" BEFORE the fight with Hatton. Didn't he use every opportunity on that show to promote the upcoming match? I think he did it so often, they used to joke about how he constantly asked the fans of the show to make sure they get it.
The possibility exists that Floyd isn't ducking anyone in particular. Maybe he is just aware of the fact that he no longer wants to train, meaning he could lose to Oscar, Miguel or Antonio. A great fighter, Wilfred Benitez, also a welterweight, used to be able to beat most anyone without spending time in the gym. His reflexes and defense were just that good. Analysts used to accuse him of having radar.
But when he pretty much abandoned training? His career took a nosedive that he never recovered from. That is what Floyd could be worried about. If he can't get excited enough to put in the time in preparation for the big fights, he knows he's going to get his ass kicked.

Exactly my thoughts, I think he realizes he just doesn't have it in him to get up for fights. Roy Jones used to complain again and again about how hard it was to get up for the assembly lines of bums he fought for millions.
He only fought Tarver because Tarver's mouth backed him into a corner and he had no choice. I don't think Cotto is gonna start calling out Mayweather so bad that he will be forced out of retirement, but his record and popularity could do it for him if he keeps elevating both.
