The MWC Week 8 Review

The Conference Championship Race is over…

Air Force 16 (4-4, 3-2) – Utah 23 (OT)

This was an exciting game right down to the finish.  But really what it told us is that both teams are average to good, which make for a great contest.  As much as I like Jefferson I really think this Dietz guy is the QB of the future for Air Force.  Anyone who remembers Carney knows what I am talking about.  Dietz will run the Offense just like Carney did and be very successful.

As I said last week, in order to move the ball and win games Air Force has to get back to what they do best…the option.  They didn’t run the ball well enough to win this game.

BYU 7 (6-2, 3-1) – #6 TCU 38

For the second year in a row TCU showed us what championship football is all about.  For the second year in a row our offense managed a measly 7 points.  But new this year was that our defense showed no signs of stopping the Horned Frogs.

Great job TCU.  You proved that nobody in this conference is in the same league as you.

Colorado State 28 (3-5, 0-4) - San Diego State 42

As I predicted in my rankings last week, SDSU is a better team than CSU.  What was surprising in this game was that CSU jumped out to a quick lead and then let it slip away very quickly in the 3rd quarter.

Stucker put up average numbers and Mosure had a fantastic game even throwing for a TD on a trick play. Unfortunately it was all for naught as CSU remains BEATEN in the MWC.

New Mexico 17 (0-7, 0-3) – UNLV 34

Turnovers and a lack of defense proved to be the downfall of the Lobos this week.  Not that we have seen much upside from them this year.  After letting UNLV jump out to a comfortable lead, UNM brought the game back within 7 points and then UNLV put the dagger in scoring 10 more unanswered points.

That pretty much wraps it up for New Mexico this year.  Might as well have the banquet and start game planning for the season opener of 2010 and try and get things started on the right note.

San Diego State 42 (3-4, 1-2) – Colorado State 28

I think that a nice close game against BYU is just what SDSU needed to give them some more confidence to go with their talent.   Lindley demolished the CSU defense, throwing for459 yards and 6 TDs!  Are you kidding me?  Apparently CSU didn’t know who DeMarco Sampson (WR-#1) was from the film, because they let him catch 15 balls for 257 yards!

Who were the Rams preparing for all week?

SDSU is scary good.  Good because of the talent they have and scary because they have not quite realized how good they can be.  My prediction was that there program would contend for the MWC Championship in 2 years…keep progressing at this rate and it may be next year.

#6 TCU 38 (7-0, 3-0) – BYU 7

This one was all Horned Frogs, All the Time!…AGAIN.  Gotta hand it to Gary Patterson, he is running a tight ship down there in Ft Worth.

I want to address the speed thing again really quick.  Patterson hit the nail on the head in the pre-game interview.  He said, “This game always comes down to who is more physical.  People want to talk about our speed, but the winner of this game is always the more physical team.”  It is not speed that got us beat.  It is the fact that we got man handled up front on both side of the ball.  We got pushed around more than we got ran around.

UNLV 34 (3-5, 1-3) - New Mexico 17

Congrats to UNLV for beating a horrible New Mexico team. They had everything clicking.  Clayton threw for a bunch, everyone ran for a bunch, and Wolfe notched his usual 100+ yards receiving.

Best thing about the win for UNLV?  They won a conference game which means they are more than 1/2 way to their average of winning 1.57 conference games/year (in the last 8 years).

# 16 Utah 23 (6-1, 3-0) - Air Force 16 (OT)

Well, Utah is now sitting where we wish we were…at the top…again.  I think it will be short lived as they are no match for TCU either, but they won a close game in overtime, made the plays they needed to make when it mattered most (4th and 2 for the game)!

Cain further proved that he is not a very good QB and that for Utah to win they have to be able to run the ball.

Best thing about the win is that Utah is now up to #16 in the BCS standings and gets to play 2 awful teams before playing TCU.  That means that they could be ranked in the top 15 when they play TCU giving TCU ANOTHER credible win and boosting them into the NC game!  How great would it be for a MWC team to go to the NC?!

Wyoming (4-3, 2-1) (Idle)
