LOS ANGELES, CA - OCTOBER 24: UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Lyoto Machida (R) battles with UFC Light Heavyweight challenger Mauricio Rua (L) during their title fight at UFC 104 at Staples Center on October 24, 2009 in Los Angeles, California. I have watched the fight three times today to justify my feeling at the time of the PPV. Now for those that are ignorant of the scoring system, please review.
Machida won from two things, first striking percent and take down defense, yes the nine times that Shogun tried was stuffed every time (failed attempts are not a positive score on the card, watch for take downs not clinch).
Striking is not scored on landed hits alone, sorry mates please review the scoring system. After two-and-a-half hours of rewinding and slowing it down, I give it to Machida 48/47.
Round One Machida striking and take down def. Round Two same. Round Three same, yes Rua landed more in Rounds two and three, but the percent was much lower than Machidas, so you must take into consideration the striking scoring system, which is landed strikes/strikes thrown (say 10 strikes thrown, and five landed is 50 percent, which will lose to six thrown and four landed for 66 percent.)
Round Four Rua Striking Oct Control. Round Five Same. Rounds four and five were not a blow out either for two facts, Rua's striking percent almost lost him striking, and the stuffed take downs. Im sorry but DAMAGE does not win fights in a DECISION. The fighter can be cut, bruised, and battered, but IT DOES NOT MATTER. The only things that matter in a decision are the hard cold numbers.
Now after saying all that, Rua gave Machida the fight of his life, and I am counting the days to a rematch.
It may not be fair. You may not agree, but those are the cold hard numbers.
On that note, I am going to step away from this site for a while because of all the back lash I will most certainly get because of discussing this heated topic, haha. Hopefully Randy Couture will end this pointless back and forth debate. Until then my friends, keep on watching.
