UNIONDALE, NY - OCTOBER 03: A large American Flag is carried on the ice for the National Anthem during festivities before the home opener NHL hockey game betwen the New York Islanders and the Pittsburgh Penguins on October 3, 2009 at the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, New York. Three years from today we will be 10 games into the first season of the NHL Super League.

Russian hockey players will be playing for Russian hockey teams, Northern European players will be playing for Northern European teams, Canadians will be playing for Canadians, and Americans for Americans.

A much-shortened regular season and playoff championships will determine which two teams of the eight in each country are to meet in the NHL World Finals for a shot at the Stanley Cup.

Be brave, hockey fans.
