Central Defeats BGSU, Boston College on The Horizon
It should come as no surprise that Central Michigan (5-0, 7-1) left Doyt Perry Stadium with a win over Mid-American Conference foe Bowling Green (2-2, 3-5).
The Chippewas held BGSU off the scoreboard in the second half, leading to a 24-10 victory. Dan LeFevour went 16 for 22, throwing for 147 passing yards and 2 touchdowns. LeFevour also ran for 128 yards to lead the Chippewa's ground attack. Antonio Brown caught 5 passes for 68 yards and a touchdown. Linebacker Nick Bellore lead the way for the Chippewa defense with 13 tackles.
On the Bowling Green side, quarterback Tyler Sheehan went 35 for 55, throwing for 341 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Wide receiver Freddy Barnes proved to be hard to stop, catching 14 balls for 172 yards and the Falcon's only touchdown on the day.
Up next for the Chippewas is a visit to Chestnut Hill to take on the Boston College Eagles. Boston College made a visit to Mount Pleasant for the Chippewa's season opener back in 2006. Quarterback Brian Brunner started the game, but an early injury brought young Dan LeFevour into the game for a few series. Central Michigan fell just short, losing to the Eagles 31-24.
So what must LeFevour and company do to beat BC?
First off the defense must buckle down and get stops much earlier in drives. Despite only allowing 10 points, the CMU defense allowed Bowling Green to drive into the red zone on two drives before getting a much needed turnover. The defense must put more pressure on the quarterback and not allow the Eagles to methodically drive down the field.
Secondly, Dan LeFevour must get wideouts Brian Anderson and Kito Poblah involved. It's no secret that Antonio Brown is a very talented young man and a favorite target for both the running and passing attacks. Toward the end of the game, BGSU let Anderson or Poblah run freely in order to double up Brown. LeFevour must find targets besides Brown for the Chippewas to win.
Finally, the running backs need to step up and take some pressure off Dan LeFevour. While having a mobile quarterback is a definite advantage, a team can't rely on one player to carry the entire offensive load. Carl Volny will have to not only block for LeFevour, but also run the football to open up the down field passing game.
