Based on multiple reports from ESPN the Magazine's Jorge Aranguré, it sure seems like Cuban defector and lefty fireballer Aroldis Chapman has meetings scheduled with just about every interested team except the New York Yankees.
This seems odd, especially since Chapman began his latest tour of the states in New York City, where he will soon meet with the Mets, if he hasn't already.
Moreover, Aranguré reports that Chapman will be visiting Yankee Stadium "as a fan." That almost certainly means he will be in attendance at game 6 of the American League Championship Series.
You'd have to be more than a little naive not to think there will be some conversation between Chapman's people and the Yankee brass, who no doubt are providing the pitcher with comfy accommodations for the game or games.
But still, no formal meeting... Nothing on the Chapman schedule, which is getting more crowded by the day. So what does this mean?
It could mean good news for the Yankees.
There is no doubting that the Yankees are extremely interested in Chapman. From the moment the young left-hander defected, the Yankee organization has made no secret of their serious interest.
It seems reasonable, all things considered, that the Yankees have suggested that it would be best for Chapman to wait to visit with them last.
In other words, go make your visits to all the interested teams and see whats out there. Then come back and talk to us.
It's probably a little premature to suggest the Yankees are taking a "we won't be outbid" approach to Chapman. Nevertheless, there are some things about the way this situation is playing out that lead one to at least consider the possibility.
