Since Kyle Busch has cruised to his fourth Sprint Cup victory of the season last Sunday at Dover, many have come to believe he is a lock for the 2008 Sprint Cup championship.
But before you put your "Sure Thing" money down for the championship, don't forget we were saying the same thing about Jeff Gordon last season. Gordon had a 317-point lead going into the Chase for the Cup, and still ended up short in his quest for a fifth Cup Championship.
There are three more things that could harm Busch's chances—aside from the point reset after Richmond:
1. Getting burned out. Shrub is running in so many races you have to wonder if his schedule will eventually take its toll on the young Busch.
2. He's not making any friends. With his hardheaded driving style—especiall y this season—Busch hasn't made nearly as many friends as he has enemies. That may come back to bite him in the chase, when some of his enemies aren't racing for a championship.
3. The possibility of a Joe Gibbs Racing meltdown due to the distractions from Tony Stewart's contract situation.
In my opinion the only thing that can truly beat Kyle Busch this season is himself. He is having a fantastic season thus far, but it isn't over until November.
