We wandered in here the week of the UW vs Arizona State game after walking two miles from 3rd and Mill in 100 degree weather, in search of liquor and a food. Fortunately for us, this place specializes in both.
As you approach, there is patio furniture and seating, with two TVs for outdoor watching of football, baseball ,and golfing. Tall trees with a misting system that provides shade and cooling for sitting in their outdoor liquor and food garden in any type of weather.
Judging by its name, one would expect Tempe's Baers Den Bar & Grill aka Frank's Friendly Tavern to be a brewpub filled with upwardly mobile rollerbladers.
In fact, it's an old-school, one-room, lodge-styled bar and grill, and a total awesome charmer, with a trio of wide-screen TVs.
Offering everything any normal person could want in cold beer and liquor (here, Bar & Grill is a state of mind, not an alcoholic restriction), the Baers Den also slings good and plentiful grub, with Saturday & Sunday featuring down home cooked breakfast by the irresistible Lisa.
The bartenders (Doug the "Freak" Woodall) and patrons are always spry and engaging. The staff here was "real polite" when we were in.
It is not a pretentious place by any means. It is a chill place to go if you just want to have a pint at your friendly neighborhood bar and grill.
The crowd is guys and gals visiting their children at ASU mixed in with stock brokers, business owners, tourists, students, retired folks, and blue collar workers.
One of the patrons, Floyd Walz, who is a retired gentleman, but still working at the hotel next door acts like the local travel agent for booking of future hotel accommodations for future events. Floyd has great knowledge of the Bar and Grill and past characters who have visited the Baers Den.
The Baers Den is a must stop if visiting just for Game Day or for Baseball's Fall and Spring training camps.
