As you may already know Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard is at the centre of yet another club versus country dispute. The Liverpool skipper picked up a thigh injury whilst on international duty for England. The injury resulted in him being taken off after just 23 minutes in Liverpool's vital champions league game versus Lyon on Tuesday and now he may not be available for Liverpool's massive game on Saturday against Manchester United, a game which Rafa dare not lose.
This has angered many Liverpool fans who saw their team slump to four straight defeats in all competitions, their worst run in over 22 years. Some Liverpool fans must be wondering why Steven Gerrard puts up with England, as unpatriotic as this sounds I will back any Liverpool fan, or even any football fan who does want their troops playing for England.
International 'breaks' if you can call them a break, seem to always result in Steven Gerrard returning to Liverpool injured, and for what? If England fail in a major competition E.g the 2006 World Cup who gets the blame? The major players such as Lampard, Terry, Gerrard. Yet if they qualify for a major competition or even progress what thanks do they get. The point im trying to get at here is that why should these players be forced to play for their country, or face a nation hating them, when they get nothing in return; no wages, silverwere or even a thanks from the nation.
I for one wish Gerrard would follow in the footsteps of his fellow team mate Jamie Carragher, who backs-up a lot of my statements in his autobiography and opitimizes a player who gave his all and got nothing in return, and retire from international duty.
So next time England 'fans' when you see a star like Gerrard playing for England, just show a bit of appreciation instead of booing your players in pointless games vs Kazakhstan and think that player owes you nothing and gets nothing from his country.
