ESPN's Game Day coverage this weekend will be from Provo, Utah! Why? TCU and the Mountain West Conference, that's why. Lot's of love for TCU but little for the WAC and Boise State. Oh, I know the TCU vs. BYU game isn't even broadcast on ESPN (It's on Verus) so why the coverage? Well the hype is 'on' now for TCU, that's why! All the sports 'guru's' on radio, TV and in the newspapers are beginning to jump on the TCU bandwagon in hopes of surpassing the number 4 ranked (First BCS Poll) Boise State Broncos. I read just this week 3 different stories that suggest (strongly too) that BSU's win over Oregon should be discounted because Oregon "just wasn't the same team when they played Boise State." What? Yup, three different writers just this week! Let's see now, Oregon did have their once All-American running back candidate (Mr. Blount who had minus total yardage in 9 carries) when they played BSU and as we all know the Ducks have been without him since. Boise State didn't just beat Oregon, they dominated the Ducks! Oregon just isn't the same team as they were then? How about Boise State? They the same team? Wow. I don't buy into that argument at all!
So what's the REAL issue? Why no love? It's the WAC! The WAC is in serious need of a PR blitz. If the Western Athletic Conference wants to land another BCS game, they'll need to do a better job of public relations! You can bet that ESPN didn't just pick Provo (for game day) out of a hat! The MWC clearly did a great job of PR and landed the highly rated pregame show. Now, I know you'll ask; "but where is a match up in the WAC that could be as good as BYU vs TCU"? That very question poses the second problem. The WAC just doesn't have the high quality teams it needs in order to attract a major Saturday college football show. At least the MWC has Utah, BYU and TCU - three fairly quality teams over the past few years. The WAC? What do they have this year other than Boise State? (I know, I know. I left the University of Idaho out of this argument - sorry Vandal fans but we're talking about successful programs over the past few years). The long and short of all this is the fact that the WAC had better get off it's fanny and start promoting the BSU program or it very well could see that "non BSC" invite go to TCU and not Boise State!
And what about 2010? Did I mention that Boise State has only 5 seniors on their entire roster? Yes, I said ENTIRE ROSTER! And ... those who are jumping on TCU's bandwagon right now will not be able to use the excuse of "but.....but.....Boise State doesn't play anybody" next year. BSU plays both Oregon State and Virgina Tech in 2010 (it's about time). If the Broncos could go undefeated next year how could anyone deny them a shot at the national championship? It won't happen unless the WAC conference starts doing a better job of promoting their better (and best) teams!
