SHANGHAI, CHINA - OCTOBER 17: Novak Djokovic of Serbia congratulates Nikolay Davydenko of Russia after their match during the semifinal round on day seven of the 2009 Shanghai ATP Masters 1000 at Qi Zhong Tennis Centre on October 17, 2009 in Shanghai, China. Yesterday Nikolay Davydenko won the ATP Masters 1000 Event in Shanghai, China after he turned in a superb display to beat Rafael Nadal 7-6 6-3.

In the semi finals Davydenko beat the world No. 3 Novak Djokovic in three tight sets. Last year the Masters Cup was hosted in Shanghai and Djokovic won the title ironically beating Davydenko in the final on that occasion. Djokovic also beat Davydenko in the group stages last year despite losing a set 6-0 in the 2nd set.

Davydenko is one of the most solid players in men’s tennis and he will be delighted to have won the 3rd ATP Masters 1000 event of his career. The Russian has never reached a Grand Slam final, but many regard him as one of the best players never to win a Grand Slam title.

Davydenko's victory takes him to No. 7 in the world rankings and gives him a very strong chance of qualifying for the Masters Cup in London next month. If Davydenko can find his best form then he has every chance of upsetting the Betting Odds and winning the Masters Cup.
