A strong running attack, aggressive defense, and late-game heroics by the offense have been qualities that earned the Bengals first place in the AFC North. Unfortunately for Marvin Lewis and company, none of those were prevalent today.
The Bengals scored 10 points in the final 48 seconds of the first half. After taking a 17-14 lead into the locker room at halftime, they completely imploded in the second half.
Cedric Benson had just 44 yards on 16 carries. He only carried the ball four times in the second half.
Houston quarterback Matt Schaub completed 28 of 40 passes for 392 yards and four touchdowns. A two-score deficit and Carson Palmer interception late in the game ensured that the "Cardiac Cats" would not be pulling off a win today.
Dropped passes and fumbles seemed to be the theme du jour for the Bengals offense.
The defense also had a case of stone-hands against the Texans. Johnathan Joseph dropped a would-be interception that he could have easily returned for a touchdown.
Defensive end Antwan Odom suffered an injury to his Achilles tendon. Lewis called the situation "pretty severe."
They will have more information tomorrow—as will I.
