Jasper Howard, a junior and starting cornerback at the University of Connecticut was killed during the early hours of Sunday morning on campus after being involved in an altercation in which he was stabbed.
He was flown by lifestar to St. Francis Hospital, and was pronounced dead immediately after being transported by ambulance to Windham Hospital.
The suspects remain at large after a fight broke out outside the Student Union, which is located near the center of campus. Another victim was stabbed in the altercation, and there is currently a criminal investigation going on where the crime occurred.
Only hours earlier, Howard strongly contributed in a Huskies 38-25 victory at home over the University of Louisville. He had 11 tackles, a forced fumble, and fumble recovery in the victory that helped UConn get to 4-2 on the season, 1-1 in the big east.
Jasper Howard has been one of the bright spots of this UConn defense this season. After starting every game last year opposite of Darius Butler, Howard had established himself this season as a strong cornerback and dynamic punt returner in which he led the Big East in last season.
Howard, who is from Miami, had aspirations to play in the national football league. With his 4.4 forty yard dash speed, and play-making ability on defense, Howard would have likely been drafted in 2011 NFL Draft.
The University of Connecticut is a state of shock following this devastating incident. Jasper Howard will certainly be missed by his fans, friends, teammates, and family.
Rest in peace Jasper Howard, you will remain in the hearts and on the minds of all those who ever knew you.
