Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton found himself in hot water earlier this week when he made a sexist remark in response to a female reporter's question.

Newton later apologized, calling his remarks "extremely degrading and disrespectful" and appeared to be further making a statement with his wardrobe as he boarded the Panthers' plane for Detroit on Saturday.

The Panthers' Twitter account shared an image of Newton wearing what appears to be a Rosie the Riveter button on his hat.

Rosie the Riveter, a cultural icon that originated during World War II, is often used as a symbol of feminism.
