Megan Rapinoe is out and Ella Masar is in for the National Team as they take Germany later this month. US Soccer released the bittersweet news after Rapinoe underwent arthroscopic knee surgery on her left leg this morning. Rapinoe should only be sidelined for a few weeks.
While it’s unfortunate that Rapinoe won’t travel with the team to take on the European Champions on Oct. 29 in Augsburg, Germany, it’s an outstanding opportunity for Masar.
The dynamic University of Illinois standout had a solid showing this season, but failed to be the spark off the bench the team was looking for. Getting international playing time and the confidence that comes with representing your country against the best team in the world could bridge that gap.
Not to mention that, according to her Twitter , she’s been working her tail off in the offseason.
Masar will be filling in for the suddenly retired Angela Hucles (Hi! Blindsided, party of one?) in the forward position. It remains to be seen how much game time Masar will get, she is after all competing against Abby Wambach and Amy Rodriguez for playing time.
Rapinoe is much more experienced with the National Team and will be missed as a play maker, but should be back in top shape in time for next season. Rapinoe has torn both ACL’s and has had several major surgeries on her knees. Let’s just hope this one is the last.
The USA takes off for Germany on Oct. 20 and train for eight days in Munich and Augsburg before facing the Germans at the new Impuls Arena in Augsburg.
