Rafael Nadal came through a rather though match today to advance to the semi finals as Ivan Ljubicic retired with a left thigh injury with the score at 1 set all and Ljubicic serving at the start of the third but deciding that playing on was not possible leaving Rafa to collect the win and go through to face countryman and surprise of the tournament Feliciano Lopez the world No,41 who up until this week has had a absolutely torrid season so far dropping out of the top 20 and eventually out of the top 40 to 41st this week dropping 7 places in the one week. Rafa of course has not been without problems himself this season with injuries to his knees in April and a right  abdominal rupture that has plagued him through the US Open where he lost in straight sets to eventual champion Juan Martin Del Potro.

Rafa is hoping to end all this bad luck and end 2009 , a year that started with such promise with him winning the Australian Open, on a high with some good results in Shanghai , Paris , London and of course his beloved Davis Cup where if fit Rafa will be hoping to win the final point and have the same winning feeling he had in 2004 when he was part of the team who won in Seville with Rafa winning an exciting match against Andy Roddick , then the world No,2. Rafa missed last year's final in Argentina  with tendinitis in his right knee.
