Chicago Cubs: Ten in a Row? .500 on the Road? Another Sweep?
The Comeback Cubbies did it again last night. At one point, the Padres were leading the Cubs three to one. But the Cubs weren't going to see their longest winning streak since 2001 come to a halt from the second worst team in the NL West.
After the Cubs tied it up in the top of the fifth, Geovany Soto would hit the first homer for the Cubs on this road trip to give the Cubs the lead in the top of the sixth. Later in the inning, Mark DeRosa, an unlikely candidate to hit the long ball, cracked a two-run homer to deep center.
Another long ball from Soriano is what really gave the Cubs the cushion they'd need. It was a three-run blast that put the Cubs ahead nine to three in the top of the eighth. San Diego had a legitamate chance to come back in the bottom of the inning, but came up a little short, and after the Cubs did nothing in the top of the ninth, Kerry Wood came out to close the deal for the Cubs. Kerry now has 16 saves in 20 chances.
Tonight, the Cubs can extend their winning streak to 10, come out even overall on the road at 13-13, and they could sweep their third straight series.
Tonight's pitching match-up: Ted Lilly LHP (5-4, 5.54 ERA) vs Greg Maddux RHP (3-4, 3.69 ERA). Lilly's last outing was one he'd rather forget. He started the game against the Rockies last Friday. The Cubs came back from an eight run deficit to win. The Cubs have beat Maddux once already this season, and hopefully will do it again today.
