The Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest saw a familiar face win last year after his previous eight-year winning streak was snapped in 2015. Joey “Jaws” Chestnut bounced back from his first loss since 2006 with a victory a year ago, edging Matt “The Megatoad” Stonie for the title in a rout.
Stonie had upset Chestnut in 2015, eating 62 hot dogs to 60 for his opponent. But Stonie regressed last year, consuming just 53 compared to a new record of 70 for Chestnut in the Nathan’s contest.
The previous mark of 69 in the competition was set by Chestnut in 2013, and he also ate an all-time record 73 in an official qualifying event last year, the Giant National Capital BBQ Battle in Washington, D.C.
Stonie is listed as a +225 underdog (bet $100 to win $225), and he has never eaten more than 62. There are several over/under total props on the number of hot dogs eaten by the winner too. The total closest to a pick’em has the over/under set at 67.5, with the over favored at -150 and the under +110.
Bettors who think Chestnut or another competitor will break the record for most hot dogs eaten might want to take a shot at over 71.5 at +225 with over 69.5 worth +120.
On the women’s side, Miki Sudo is an even bigger favorite over Sonya “The Black Widow” Thomas than Chestnut is against Stonie at -400. Sudo has won three straight women’s titles after Thomas won the previous three.
Thomas (+250) set the all-time mark for women with 45 hot dogs in 2012. Sudo had the most for women last year with 38.5, which is her personal best in the Nathan’s contest. She previously won the title with 38 and 34 in 2015 and 2014, respectively.
Thomas ate 40 or more in two of her three title runs. The over/under total for the women is 39.5, with the under favored at -160.
