With Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming, Preakness champion Cloud Computing and presumed morning-line favorite Classic Empire all out for the final leg of the Triple Crown, the stage was set for a contender to break through and take advantage of a wide-open field.
For the majority of the race, that appeared to be trainer Graham Motion's Irish War Cry—who was in the lead at the top of the stretch and seemed to be in a nice spot to make good on his status as the favorite.
However, Irish War Cry started to run out of steam with the wire in sight.
With an opening to surge ahead, Tapwrit blew past Irish War Cry and didn't look back as jockey Jose Ortiz executed his game plan to a T.
