The match is the fifth to be confirmed for the pay-per-view, which is exclusive to Raw and the first PPV event after WrestleMania 33.
Joe nearly cost Rollins his match against Triple H at WrestleMania. The Destroyer made his main roster debut on the Jan. 30 edition of Raw and attacked Rollins on orders from Triple H:
WWE confirmed Rollins suffered a torn MCL, and it was only after he signed a hold harmless agreement that Triple H agreed to wrestle him at the Showcase of the Immortals:
Rollins beat The King of Kings, sending both Triple H and his wife, Stephanie McMahon, away for the time being. Rollins vs. Joe could be a way to bring Triple H back into the fold, but it would make more sense to leave the focus on the two wrestlers in the ring rather than involving The Authority.
Payback will be Joe's first marquee match since making the jump from NXT. He beat Sami Zayn at Fastlane in March—a bout that was more about building Joe as a monster heel than turning him into a main event star.
Even in a losing effort, a great match against Rollins could further burnish Joe's credibility among the fans who aren't as familiar with his work in TNA and NXT before he arrived on Raw.
