Same Sad Story: Cal team overhyped, Cal fans scratching heads

This was finally the year the Golden Bears were supposed to go to the rose bowl for the first time in 50 long years. This team was different than the ones of the past with its Heisman candidate running back, improved quarterback and dominant secondary. Then the last two weeks happened. Remind me how all of the folks in bear territory could have been deceived so easily.

Hype is a funny thing. To college teams without long term success hype is a drug to overdose on then promptly take a tumble down the ranking i.e. Ole Miss, BYU, Houston, and of course Cal. After the 3-0 start it was time to talk Rose Bowl. College Gameday, the ultimate hype machine, and many other prognosticators had Cal going to the land of the roses. I guess the only thing bears fans have to be thankful of now is that this team did not play the role of fraud as long into the season as the 07 squad who was seconds from being the number one team in the country. A Kevin Riley mistake prevented that from happening and the team took an embarrassing tumble only winning twice the rest of that season. The bears always fall into heartbreak. Sometimes it is not always there fault. Thank Mack Brown in 04 for that one. So what does this mean for the rest of the season? My bet is cal will rebound and make a mid tier bowl. If they don't Tedford will feel the heat.  The fact that Cal was the doormat for so many years under Holmoe has helped Tedford so far. Tedford needs to show that this team can rebound or his coaching methods will come into serious question for the first time since he stepped on the Berkeley campus.
