We'll be honest. When CC Sabathia tanked in his final start of the regular season, we got a little nervous, and were suddenly filled with questions.
Was it a one-game fluke? Would CC re-find himself in time for his next start to open the 2009 postseason? Was Sabathia suddenly wearing down after so many regular season innings?
All those questions and any others were answered in the positive, at least for the Yankees and their fans, with a brilliant performance from Sabathia on Wednesday night as the New York Yankees beat the Minnesota Twins, 7-2, in game 1 of the ALDS at Yankee Stadium.
"This is what you come here for -- to have a chance to win and pitching in the postseason, playing in October," said Sabathia. "It was electric tonight. It felt good. I had a lot of fun out there."
Sabathia pitched 6.2 innings tonight, allowing only 1 earned run (2 total, thanks to a 2-out passed ball) on eight hits. CC did not walk a batter all night, struck out 8 and threw 71 of his 113 pitches for strikes.
Just an awesome performance and confidence-builder (at least for us) from Sabathia, whom teammates said was working without his best stuff.
"That's what we envisioned when we signed him -- CC would be pitching in late October and November," said Joe Girardi. "It was the reason we got him. We thought that he could lead this staff and be the ace of this staff, and that's what he has been for us."
