The Daily Herald is reporting that the Chicago Blackhawks will face the Detroit Red Wings for the first time in the 2009-10 season without two key veterans. Center Dave Bolland and wing Ben Eager have been scratched from the lineup for Thursday night’s contest at Joe Louis Arena.

Bolland has a sore back and is targeting a return in time for the Hawks’ Home Opener on Saturday night. Bolland had played on a line with Patrick Kane and Dustin Byfuglien in the Hawks 4-0 victory on Saturday that produced two of the four goals. Newly acquired John Madden would likely take Bolland’s place between Kane and Byfuglien.

Eager reportedly has “upper body issues” and is undergoing further tests. The Herald speculates that Eager’s history of concussions might be playing a role.

The Hawks will also be without defender Aaron Johnson, who was traded to Calgary on Wednesday. Forward Troy Brouwer is reportedly a game-time decision as well.
