What is with all of the talk about the University of Miami football program, or "The U" as they like to call it, returning to national prominence?  On every sports talk show, all you have heard about since their week one victory, is their return to the national stage.  Is this just the hot topic right now or are these commentators just that in love with this Miami program.  Sure they have produced countless NFL prospects, but they have also had a full team melee on the field.  That may have gone too far, but I still do not get all the hype surrounding this team.

All the talk has been about their tough scheduling in the first four games.  Lets look at these match ups a little closer.

Week 1: @ #18 Florida State

This game came down to the wire.  It was a very entertaining game to watch.  Two classic schools renewing their rivalry and it was a great game.  Florida State easily could have won this game.  Christian Ponder had been slinging the ball around the field all night and then on the crucial, culminating play, he misses a wide open receiver in the end zone for the winning touchdown.  At the time the Seminoles were ranked #18 in the nation and have since been sporadic.  They needed a late comeback against I-AA Jacksonville State, then blew out highly ranked #7 BYU in Provo, then lose miserably to South Florida and Boston College.  So, how good does the win for Miami over FSU look now?

Week 2: #14 Georgia Tech

Tech came into this game riding high after last year's surprising turn around.  But that was last year.  Georgia Tech's vaunted option attack could not get started and with no air game to soften up the defense the offense was left spinning their wheels.  Georgia Tech is sitting at 4-1, with wins over I-AA Jacksonville State (that same JSU that Florida State struggled with), a hapless Clemson team, an overrated North Carolina team and most recently Mississippi State, which has been at the bottom of the SEC for years.  Georgia Tech should be 4-1 and deserve their #22 ranking.  But, with the schedule they have played so far, was this a huge win for Miami?

Week 3: @ #11 Virginia Tech

Virginia Tech rebounded from their early season setback against Alabama and really took it to Miami in this match up.  Virginia Tech is the best of these four teams that Miami has played.  So, for how badly Miami looked in this game, does this mean that this loss was a "good loss?"  Does it justify a hiccup if its a highly rated team?  And thus a shorter drop in the polls than another team?

Week 4:  #8 Oklahoma

Miami wins by 1 point in this match up.  This is the same Oklahoma team that was beaten by BYU, right?  And that same BYU team was blown out by Florida State, right?  This Oklahoma team was without their Heisman trophy winning quarterback, but still, this is an Oklahoma team that is 2-2, with wins over I-AA Idaho State and Tulsa.  Wow, that looks like a #8 ranked team to me.  So, when Oklahoma wins next week and then loses to Texas the following week and is sitting 3-3 and unranked, how big of a win will this have been for Miami?

Miami's future schedule is full of patty cakes and sub par ACC foes.  Which means that since everyone has jumped on the Miami train and vaulted them up the polls, they aren't going to be going anywhere soon.  They will slowly climb their way further up the polls as better teams ahead of them fall.  I, for one, am not on the Miami train this season.  I feel these four early season match ups were so over hyped that in winning them they had to be anointed as returning kings.  The following years should be bright for the Hurricanes and in winning in the following seasons, they will then deserve the hype that has prematurely been given them.
